South Yorkshire Head 2013

IM3 8+

Saturday 9th February saw Sheffield University Rowing Club return to one of our favourite local races South Yorkshire Head in Doncaster, affectionately known as 'Donneh International'.  Despite the snow apprehending our training the crews were ready to race against local clubs and Universities.  An early start in the dark for the 42 competitors, an all too regular occurrence for rowers.  We arrived first, and got the boats rigged and ready to go for an exciting day of racing was ahead of us.

IM3 4-
Division 1 saw the Senior Men’s coxless four fight to retain their unbeaten title within Yorkshire this season. And they didn’t disappoint, a solid performance from the crew saw them dominate their category. The Senior Women’s squad raced two coxed fours. Although racing in two different boat classes the crews were evenly matched on paper so we were all keen to see who would come out on top. The IM3 four came last in their category, however beat the NOV four by 44 seconds, so were very pleased with their result. The NOV four came third in their category, also a great result. The two crews will merge to form an eight for the rest of the season, so these results bode well for the future.

Division 2 was the Novices chance to take to the water. The third time they have ever raced since joining the sport in September. Both men’s and women’s crews showed how much they have learned since tentatively stepping in a boat for the first time 5 months ago. The Novice Mens eight put in a great effort despite last minute crew changes, they narrowly missed out on beating Hallam by 20 seconds. With Varsity just weeks away this has spurred them into action to change the outcome next time. The Novice Women’s eight had a fantastic race and secured their second victory of the season. They completed  the course 1m 20s ahead of Hallam. The Senior Men’s coxed four put in a solid performance, finishing just behind Hallam.

WIM3 4-
In the third and final division the Senior squads were back on the water. The weather conditions in the lead up to the race meant that the Mens eight had not trained in their crew before race day, this didn’t slow them down though! Although they were narrowly pipped to the post by York, a second place finish ahead of Hallam was a positive result. The Senior Women raced another coxed four, the relatively inexperienced crew showed both technical skill and power coming 5th in their category. The Senior Women’s coxless four had an ‘incident’ with a tree which impeded their time, but all good race experience.

A successful day of racing all round, and great preparation ahead of BUCS Head next weekend.
